I Have Sebaceous Hyperplasia – What Can I Do?

Sebaceous Hyperplasia is a skin condition. It mostly occurs in people who have oily skin. Sebaceous Hyperplasia are small bumps that can occur anywhere on the face. The bumps are depressed in the center that differentiate them from common whiteheads; and have a yellowish tinge to them. These are basically overgrown oil glands that have become clogged over time and typical acne treatments do not work on them. This is why they mostly occur around oily areas.

This skin condition occurs usually in people over 40 years of age or it can be a result of sun damage for younger people. Although the condition is not painful, it is definitely visible. Therefore, some people might prefer to treat them.

If you think, you have this condition, it is best to consult a dermatologist and discuss your treatment options with him or her. So what are the treatment options available for Sebaceous Hyperplasia?

Sebaceous Hyperplasia Treatments

Several options are available when it comes to choosing a Sebaceous Hyperplasia treatment; although all those treatments come with associated risks. A few of these treatments are purely clinical; while some home remedies are also claimed to be effective:

Intralesional desiccation:

This procedure involves administering anesthesia to the area and inserting tiny needles to the lesion. Then using a fine needle inserted in every lobule of the lesion, the lesion is heated using electricity. This is the most effective treatment and leaves very little scarring.

Pros:

  • Very effective
  • Relatively inexpensive
  • Leaves little scarring
  • Not very painful

Lasers

One of the most common cosmetic treatments is a laser treatment which uses light reaction to treat Sebaceous hyperplasia.

Acid peels

Salicylic acid or Trichloroacetic acid is applied to the affected area. This causes the skin to peel off effectively treating Sebaceous hyperplasia.

Retinoid or azelaic acid are also used to treat Sebaceous hyperplasia; however they only reduce the condition, not treat them completely.

Liquid nitrogen

Liquid nitrogen is applied to the bump. Liquid nitrogen causes it to dry up and eventually fall off much like warts and moles. However, excessive liquid nitrogen is risky as it may cause a scar or loss of pigment if it penetrates too deeply.

Surgical excision

This is the last treatment option that dermatologists recommend if all else has failed. However, surgical excision can lead to scars.

Home Remedies

If you are not looking for dermatological solutions and are in fact more interested in home remedies, we have a few that can help you with this condition.

Apple cider vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is a popular home remedy for many skin related issues. It aids in balancing the skin pH level and is effective in dissolving Sebaceous hyperplasia.

Peppermint essential oil

This oil is well-known for its anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. Peppermint essential oil helps eliminate excess oil in the skin and also aids in reducing enlarged oil glands back to their normal size. Apply peppermint oil regularly on face before sleeping.

Lemon oil

Lemon oil is antiseptic and a good astringent due to its acidic properties. Applying lemon oil drops directly on the affected area can reduce Sebacious Hyperplasia over time.
